કોરોનાવાયરસ એ વિષાણુઓનું એક જૂથ છે જે સસ્તન પ્રાણીઓ અને પક્ષીઓમાં રોગો ઉત્પન્ન કરે છે.^[૫] મનુષ્યમાં કોરોનાવાયરસને કારણે શ્વસન માર્ગમાં ચેપ લાગે છે જે ઘણી વાર હળવો હોઈ શકે છે. અમુક કિસ્સાઓમાં તે સામાન્ય શરદી જેવો લાગે છે. અન્ય સંભવિત કારણોની સાથે (મુખ્યત્વે રાયનોવાયરસ) અમુક વાર આ ચેપ ઘાતક હોઈ શકે છે, જેમ કે સાર્સ, મર્સ અને કોવિડ-૧૯. મનુષ્ય સિવાય અન્ય જાતિઓમાં આ વાયરસના ચેપના લક્ષણો અલગઅલગ હોય છે, દા.ત. મરઘીમાં એના કારણે ઉપલા શ્વસન માર્ગનો રોગ થાય છે, જ્યારે ગાય અને ભુંડમાં જાનવરને ઝાડા થાય છે . માણસમાં કોરોનાવાયરસનો ચેપ ફેલાતો અટકાવવા અથવા તેની સારવાર માટે હજી કોઈ રસી કે એન્ટિવાયરલ દવાઓ બની નથી.^[૬]
