He had one more son, who is better known than Bhrigu himself - [[Shukra]]. The sage Chyavana is also said to be his son. [Maha:1.5]

The '''Bhrigus''', also known as '''Bhargavas''', are a clan of sages descending from the ancient fire-priest Bhrigu. They instituted the ritual of offering the juice of the [[Soma]] plant to the old [[deities]]. Some of them were also warriors in addition to being priests. The Bhrigus are intimately linked with the composition of the [[Atharva-Veda]].

 

Bhrigu is credited as the father of Hindu astrology and the first astrological treatise [[Bhrigu Samhita]] is attributed to his authorship. This treatise is said to contain over 5 million horoscopes, in which he wrote down the fate of every being in the universe. According to popular tradition, only about a hundredth of these horoscopes have survived to this age.

 

 

એકવાર ભૃગુ ઋષિને દેવોની પરીક્ષા લેવાનું મન થયું. તેમને થયું કે સૌથી મહાન કોણ છે ? ભૃગુ ઋષિ સૌપ્રથમ બ્રહ્માજી પાસે ગયા અને જેમતેમ બોલવા લાગ્યા. બ્રહ્માજી ગુસ્સે થઈ ગયા અને ઋષિને શાપ આપવા તૈયાર થયા. ઋષિએ માફી માગી લીધી અને ત્યાંથી કૈલાસ જવા નીકળ્યા. કૈલાસ પર્વત પર સદાશિવ પાર્વતી સાથે બેઠા હતા. ત્યાં જઈને ભૃગુ ઋષિ એલફેલ બોલવા માંડ્યા. શંકર ગુસ્સે થઈ ગયા અને ત્રિશુલ લઈને મારવા દોડ્યા. ઋષિએ માફી માગી અને પાર્વતીએ સમજાવ્યા ત્યારે શિવજી શાંત થયા. ત્યાંથી નીકળીને ઋષિ વૈકુંઠમાં જઈ પહોંચ્યા. વૈકુંઠમાં વિષ્ણુ ભગવાન શેષશૈય્યા પર સૂતા હતા. ભૃગુ ઋષિએ જઈને વિષ્ણુને છાતીમાં લાત મારી અને કહ્યું, ‘એક ઋષિ આવે ત્યારે આમ પડ્યા રહેતાં શરમ નથી આવતી ?’

 

વિષ્ણુ ભગવાન ઊભા થઈ ગયા. તેમણે ઋષિના પગ દબાવ્યા કે મારી વજ્ર જેવી છાતી પર પ્રહાર કરવાથી તમને ક્યાંક વાગ્યું તો નથી ને ? ક્રોધને જીતનાર વિષ્ણુને મહાન જાહેર કરતાં ભૃગુ ઋષિએ કહ્યું, ‘લક્ષ્મી તમને વરે એ જ યોગ્ય છે.’ આમ, ક્રોધને જીતનાર સૌથી મોટો વિજેતા છે.
