નવલકથાનું મુખ્ય પાત્ર પાકટ વયના પ્રોફેસર અરામ શાહ છે, જેમને પક્ષાઘાત (પેરેલિસિસ)નો હુમલો થતા તેઓ સતત સહચાર અને સહાનુભૂતિના વાતાવરણમાં વિશિષ્ટ વ્યક્તિત્વ ધરાવતી નર્સ આશિકા દીપની સંભાળ હેઠળ આવે છે. ભૂતકાળના બનાવોની સ્મૃતિઓ અને વર્તમાનના તંતુઓ એકબીજા સાથે આ નવલકથામાં સ્વાભાવિક રીતે જોડાતા રહે છે.<ref name="gsk" />
