જયા મહેતાનો જન્મ ૧૬ ઓગસ્ટ ૧૯૩૨ના રોજ [[ભાવનગર જિલ્લો|ભાવનગર જિલ્લાના]], કોલિયાક[[કોળીયાક (તા. ભાવનગર)]]કોળિયાક]] ગામે લલીતાબેન અને વલ્લભદાસને ત્યાં થયો હતો. તેમણે પીટીસી સુધી અભ્યાસ કરી પ્રાથમિક શાળાનાં શિક્ષિકા તરીકે કામ કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. <ref name="TharuLalita1991">{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OjZYf9Xf9bcC&pg=PA365|title=Women Writing in India: The twentieth century|last=Susie J.
