તેમનો જન્મ મુંબઈ માં ૫ એપ્રિલ ૧૯૩૮ ના દિવસે થયો હતો. તેમની માતાનું નામ રંભાબહેન અને તેમના પિતાનું નામ કામેશ્વર વ્યાસ હતું. <ref name="sharma">{{Cite book|title=Saksharno Sakshatkar (Question-based Interviews with biographical literary sketches)|last=Sharma|first=Radheshyam|date=2005|publisher=Rannade Prakashan|volume=Vol. 10|location=Ahmedabad|pages=239|author-link=Radheshyam Sharma}}</ref> તેમનો પરિવાર [[ચોરવાડ (તા. માળીયા હાટીના)|ચોરવાડનો છે]] . ૧૯૫૫ માં મેટ્રિક થયા પછી, તેમણે ૧૯૬૧ માં બી. એ. કર્યું અને ૧૯૬૩ માં ગુજરાતી અને સંસ્કૃત વિષયો પર એમ. એ. કર્યું. ૧૯૬૭ માં તેમણે હરિવલ્લભ ભાયાણીના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ તેમના સંશોધન કાર્ય, ગુજરાતી ભાષાના અંગસાધક પ્રત્યયો પર પીએચડીની પદવી મેળવી. ૧૯૬૯ માં તેમણે ભાષાશાસ્ત્રમાં ડિપ્લોમા પૂર્ણ કર્યું. તેમણે ૧૯૬૫ માં ઘનશ્યામ દેસાઈ નામના ગુજરાતી લઘુ વાર્તા લેખક સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા.
