બેલ્જિયમનું પાટનગર
બ્રસેલ્સ યુરોપ ખંડમાં આવેલ એક શહેર છે, જેને સત્તાવાર રીતે બ્રસેલ્સ ક્ષેત્ર અથવા બ્રસેલ્સ-રાજધાની ક્ષેત્ર કહેવામાં આવે છે[૪][૫], બેલ્જિયમ દેશની રાજધાની અને યુરોપિયન યુનિયનની માનદ રાજધાની છે. તે ૧૯ મહાનગરપાલિકાઓ સહિત બેલ્જિયમનું સૌથી મોટું શહેર છે.[૬][૭]

બ્રસેલ્સની સ્થાપના ૧૦મી સદીના કિલ્લા નગરના રૂપમાં થઈ હતી, જેની ચર્લિમગનના એક વંશજ દ્વારા સ્થાપના કરવામાં આવી હતી અને તેમાં દસ લાખ કરતાં વધુ રહેવાસીઓ હતા.[૮][૯][૧૦] બીજા વિશ્વ યુદ્ધના અંત પછી બ્રસેલ્સ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય રાજનીતિ માટેનું મુખ્ય કેન્દ્રીય બિંદુ રહ્યું છે. અહીં યુરોપિયન યુનિયનની મુખ્ય ઈમારતો[૧૧] સાથે સાથે ઉત્તર એટલાન્ટિક સંધિ સંગઠન (નાટો)નું મુખ્ય મથક પણ છે.[૧૨]

Since ૧૮ જુન ૧૯૮૯, the date of the first regional elections, the Brussels-Capital Region has been an autonomous region comparable to the Flemish and Walloon Regions.
