==ભગવાન મહાવીરના ગણધરો==
ભગવાન મહાવીરના કાળમામ્ આજના બિહારના [[પાવાપુરી]]માં એક બ્રાહ્મણ રહેતો હતો તેનું નામ સોમિલ હતું. એક વખત તેણે એક મહા બલિ ચડાવવાનું આયોજન કર્યું. સર્વ વિદ્યમાન વિદ્વાનો તેમાં જોડાય એવી તેની ઈચ્છા હતી. ઈંદ્રભૂતિ ગૌતમ કે જે તે સમયના સૌથી વિદ્વાન બ્રાહ્મણ ગનાતા હતાં તેઓ આ આયોજના પ્રમુખ સાધુ હતાં. તેના જેટલા જ વિદ્વાન એવા તેમના ભાઈઓ અગ્નિભૂતિ અને વાયુભૂતિ તેમની બાજુએ બેસવાના હતાં. વ્ય્ક્તા અને અન્ય ગણમાન્ય વ્યક્તિઓ પણ આ સમારોહમાં ઉપસ્થિત રહેવાના હતાં. સોમિલએ સુધર્માનુમ્ નામ એક વિદ્વાન તરીકે સાંભળ્યુમ્ હતુમ્ આથે તેણે તેમને પણ આમંત્રણ મોકલ્યું હતું. સુધર્માને આ મહા બલિદાનનો ભાગ બનવાની તક જતી કરવી ન હતી, ખાસ કરીને તેને ગૌતમ ભાઈઓને જોવાની તીવ્ર ઈચ્છા હતી. આથે તેમણે સહર્ષ સોમિલનું અમંત્રણ સ્વીકાર્યું. નક્કી કરેલા સમયે બલિની વિધી શરુ થઈ. યથાયોગ્ય મંત્રોચ્ચાર અને સૂત્રો સાથે આહુતિની શરુઆત થઈ. As the sacrificial smoke rose towards the sky, they noticed the celestial vehicles coming down. Indrabhuti and other priests were satisfied that they could induce the celestial beings to come down to accept the oblations. They were, however, disappointed to see that the vehicles had diverted their direction and were descending at the other end of the city. They could not make out why, forsaking their great performance, the vehicles were bound towards a different destination.
What had happened was that after attaining omniscience, [[Lord Mahavira]] had arrived at [[Pavapuri]] that very time. The heavenly beings were therefore coming down to pay their homage to the Lord and to listen to his sermon. ''Indrabhuti'' was surprised to know that. He had never come across anyone more knowledgeable than himself. He therefore guessed that [[Mahavira]] might be an impostor who could have somehow impressed the heavenly beings. It was therefore necessary to counter his tactics immediately.
