તેઓ ગુજરાતના કચ્છ પ્રદેશના છે. તેઓ ભારતીય જનતા પાર્ટી (બીજેપી) ના સભ્ય હતા. કેશુભાઇ પટેલ 1995 ની વિધાનસભાની ચૂંટણીઓમાં ભાજપને જીતવા અને માર્ચમાં મુખ્યમંત્રી બન્યા. તેમણે કેશુભાઇ પટેલ હેઠળ મંત્રી તરીકે સેવા આપી હતી. પટેલએ ઓક્ટોબર 1995 માં રાજીનામું આપ્યું કારણ કે તેમના સાથી શંકરસિંહ વાઘેલાએ તેમની વિરુદ્ધ બળવો કર્યો હતો. તેથી સુરેશ મહેતાએ ઓક્ટોબર 1995 માં મુખ્ય પ્રધાન તરીકે શપથ લીધા અને સપ્ટેમ્બર 1 99 6 સુધી સેવા આપી. પરંતુ ભાજપને વિભાજિત કરવામાં આવ્યું કારણ કે રાષ્ટ્રીય જનતા પાર્ટી વાઘેલા દ્વારા રચવામાં આવી હતી. તેમણે રાજીનામું આપ્યું અને રાષ્ટ્રપતિનું શાસન લાદવામાં આવ્યું. 1998 ની વિધાનસભા ચૂંટણીમાં ભાજપ સત્તા પર પાછો ફર્યો ત્યારે તેમણે ફરીથી પટેલ હેઠળ ઉદ્યોગપતિ તરીકે સેવા આપી હતી. 2001 ની ભૂજ ધરતીકંપ પછી 2001 માં બાય-ચુંટણીઓમાં ભાજપની બેઠકો ગુમાવવાના આરોપો અને રાહતના વિવાદમાં ગેરફાયદાના આરોપો બાદ પટેલએ રાજીનામું આપ્યું હતું. નરેન્દ્ર મોદીએ પટેલનું સમર્થન કર્યું જેના હેઠળ મહેતાએ પ્રધાન તરીકે સેવા આપવા માટે રિઝર્વેશન કર્યું હતું, પરંતુ 2002 સુધી સેવા આપી હતી. He hails from [[Kutch]] region of Gujarat. He was the member of [[Bharatiya Janata Party]] (BJP). [[Keshubhai Patel]] led BJP to win in 1995 assembly election and became chief minister in March. He served as a minister under Keshubhai Patel. Patel resigned in October 1995 as their colleague [[Shankersinh Vaghela]] revolted against him. So Suresh Mehta sworn in as Chief Minister in October 1995 and served till September 1996. But BJP was split as [[Rashtriya Janta Party]] was formed by Vaghela. He resigned and [[President's rule]] was imposed. He again served as an industry minister under Patel when BJP returned to power in 1998 assembly elections. Patel resigned in 2001 following allegations of a loss of BJP seats in [[by-elections]] and mismanagement in relief woks during 2001 [[Bhuj Earthquake]] aftermath.
